Small gems commonly known as "emphasis plants".
The Kusamono are artistically created and exposed vegetable compositions in a bonsai vase or own tray (Suiban).
They can be exposed as main elements (Kusamono) or as emphasis plants (Shitakusa), to highlight a Bonsai or Suiseki.
They are widely used in Tokonoma (the classic method of exposing Bonsai), combined with a Haiku (Japanese poem) or a painting and a Bonsai, create the trilogy “Heaven, Man and Earth”.
The Shitakusa must interact with the elements that highlight without the “abafar”, often evoke the source site of Bonsai or Suiseki.
The same principles apply to the Kusamono, and their “companiants” should serve them as a complement.
We can expose the Kusamono in Suiban (low veins without drain hole) as we expose the Suiseki, or on mats (Tatami), or any set that makes them out.
The beauty and creativity of the plants of emphasis, is in its simplicity and ease of cultivation, enough to live happily, a little water, fertilizer, light and much LOVE.
“A Bonsai or a Sueseki without a Shitakusa, are like a face without a smile”.
