Small treasures commonly known as "accent plants".
Kusamono are artistically created plant compositions displayed in a bonsai pot or a special tray (Suiban).
They can be displayed as main elements (Kusamono) or as accent plants (Shitakusa), to enhance a Bonsai or Suiseki.
They are widely used in Tokonoma (the classic method of displaying Bonsai), combined with a Haiku (Japanese poem) or a painting and a Bonsai, creating the trilogy “Heaven, Man, and Earth”.
Shitakusa should interact with the elements they enhance without “overpowering” them; often they evoke the place of origin of the Bonsai or Suiseki.
The same principles apply to Kusamono, whose “companions” should serve as their complement.
We can display Kusamono in Suiban (shallow pots without drainage holes) just as we display Suiseki, or on mats (Tatami), or any setting that makes them stand out.
The beauty and creativity of accent plants lies in their simplicity and ease of cultivation; all they need to live happily is a bit of water, fertilizer, light, and lots of LOVE.
“A Bonsai or a Suiseki without a Shitakusa is like a face without a smile.”
