Nowadays, “Stone Lanterns” are essential elements in the creation of “Japanese Gardens”.
The “Stone Lanterns” or “Ishi–Doro” were originally developed in China and later brought to Japan.
Initially, they served to illuminate the exterior of temples, and were also attributed with powers of protection and spiritual illumination.
Their main function was to “guide” guests through the garden to the room where the “Tea Ceremony” was held.
Usually used as a focal point in the garden, they are minimalist artistic expressions of Zen Buddhism.
Their rusticity and sobriety of lines allow them to fit both outdoors and in interior decorations.
Besides lanterns, there are various other decorations such as “water basins,” bridges, “Stepping Stones,” etc., all following the “Eastern Philosophy”.
Although with multiple variations and sizes, “Stone Lanterns” can be divided into 4 basic styles:
TACHI-GATA – Pedestal lanterns
IKEKOMI-GATA – Buried lanterns
OKI-GATA – Small lanterns
YUKUMI-GATA – Snow lanterns
