The success of orchid survival and the production of good blooms depends largely on the quality of the substrate used, not only on the origin of the components but also on their proportion to ensure perfect growing conditions (drainage, retention, and availability of water and nutrients).

Considering the huge variety of orchid species we cultivate, and their different types of requirements and growth origins (epiphytic, terrestrial, lithophytic....) it becomes very important to select the origin and proportion of the components to be used.

The balance between drainage and the capacity to retain and exchange nutrients is essential; these are some of the most important factors for the plant's resilience, protecting it from abiotic stress factors (fungi, bacteria, pests, and harmful agents) and biotic stress (Environmental Stress such as drought, excess water, frost, etc.).

Based on the components described below, we have specifically developed the following formulations for our climate:

Epiphytic Orchid Soil
-
Ideal for the cultivation of epiphytic orchids (Phalaenopsis, Cambrias, Miltassias, Miltonias, Brassias, Dendrobiums, Encyclias, Oncidiums, etc.).

A mixture of virgin substrates (free from pests, fungi, and weeds), with a high drainage content, while maintaining moisture and nutrient retention needs.

Composed of:

Cocochips

Calibrated pine bark

Agricultural expanded clay

Pumice

 Perlite

Terrestrial Orchid Soil -
Ideal for the cultivation of terrestrial orchids (Cymbidiums, Paphiopedilums, Bletillas, Dactylorhizas, Peliones, Ludisias, etc.).

A mixture of virgin substrates (free from pests, fungi, and weeds), retaining slightly more moisture than epiphytic soil but ensuring drainage capacity and nutrient exchange.

Cocochips

Calibrated pine bark

Agricultural expanded clay

Pumice

Brief description of the different types of components used for orchid substrate mixes:

Pumice
 - A volcanic mineral material free of limestone, resulting from the "explosive gaseous" part of magma, with a pH of 7 - 8 and good drainage, ideal for use in orchid substrate mixes and other plants with special requirements.

Its very porous structure makes it very light, with a water retention capacity superior to volcanic gravel but still providing very good drainage; it is recommended for use as a "bottom layer" in pots to ensure drainage.

Coco Chips
- These are chunks of coarse coconut fiber, ideal for the cultivation of orchids and other plants with special requirements.

They can be used pure or mixed with the Orchid Soil range to increase moisture retention while ensuring good drainage.

They can also be combined with other components to obtain specific substrates. They are chemically stabilized and free of weed seeds.

Perlite
- A volcanic-origin substrate, calibrated from 0 to 6 mm, with good air and water retention capacity, extremely lightweight.

Used to optimize orchid soil mixes, carnivorous plants, and plants with special requirements. Also used for propagation substrates (cuttings and seedbeds).

Perlite can be used pure or combined with other components to obtain specific substrates, optimizing nutrient retention and exchange.

Hidroton - Agriculturally expanded clay chemically stabilized without harmful salts so it does not react with the soil or nutrients; it is free from pests, fungi, and weeds.

It is recommended as a draining material for the cultivation of orchids and other plants with special requirements. It can be combined with the Orchid Soil range to increase drainage or with other components to obtain specific substrates.

Pine Bark
- Ideal for the cultivation of orchids and other plants with special requirements, and
is free of salts and chemically stabilized, not containing weed seeds.

It can be combined with the
Orchid Soil range to increase drainage or with other components to obtain specific substrates.

Sphagnum Moss -
Sphagnum moss can be found hydrated (usually loose) or dehydrated (usually compacted); it is ideal for orchid cultivation, either combined with other substrates or, in some cases, pure.

It is also suitable for orchid mounting and Kokedama making, whether orchids or other plants. It is widely used in Bonsai propagation (and other trees or shrubs) in air layering and as a topsoil cover for Bonsai after transplanting, especially when roots are exposed, to protect them during the initial adaptation period.

It indirectly stimulates the faster appearance of moss on the soil's surface layer beneath where it is spread, as its slightly acidic pH facilitates moss establishment, and when removed, it leaves the typical "green carpet" of moss much appreciated.
