ALLIANCE OF VANDAS (ASCOCENTRUM, VANDAS AND THEIR HYBRIDS)
Origin - They have their habitat in the humid tropical forests of Southeast Asia. They are epiphytes and grow attached to tree trunks with their long roots hanging down.
Light - They like a lot of light and can receive some direct sun as long as it is not too strong.
Temperature and Humidity - In the tropical area where these orchids thrive, both temperatures and humidity are quite high. To these two characteristics, add good air circulation. They should not be at temperatures below 18ºC.
In their cultivation, we must safeguard the great need for humidity, light, and temperature.
Pots and Substrate - They do not need pots. They are grown in suspended wooden or plastic baskets. For decoration and stability reasons indoors, they can be placed inside a transparent glass jar, but after watering, no water should remain inside.
For large and established plants, substrate is not used; for smaller plants, we can use Epiphytic Orchid Soil.
Watering and Fertilization - We should water abundantly and in a way that the roots dry quickly.
Depending on the location and if they have exposed roots, they may need to be watered up to every day during the hot times of the year; inside a jar, watering or pot watering is always less frequent.
Watering can be done by spraying, insisting until the roots become nice and green, or by dipping the roots in a container with water; if they are in a jar, we can fill it with water, wait 10 minutes, and then drain well all the water that remains in the jar.
Orchids of this family need to be fertilized frequently since there is no soil to retain nutrients; we should apply fertilizer at least weekly.
We will fertilize following the logic that after cutting the flower spike we give Nutri Orchids Humic Growth and when the new spike begins to appear, we switch to Nutri Orchids Humic Flowering.
We should apply all year round Vital Orchids Activ, which can be applied in the same watering as the fertilizers (respecting the doses of both for 1 liter of water) or separately (alternating one time fertilizer, next time fortifier).
Before fertilizing or fortifying, we should always hydrate the roots well with only water; after this, we can spray abundantly with water with fertilizer or submerge in a container with water and fertilizer (always at the recommended doses).
