Tillandsias are epiphytic air plants that absorb water and nutrients through their leaves as they do not have roots, commonly known as "Air plants" or "desert flower".

They belong to the Bromeliad family (they are related to the pineapple) and, like them, their life cycle is based on growth, flowering, and subsequent production of new shoots from the axils of the mother plant's leaves.

The mother plant provides nourishment until the new shoots have grown enough to separate from it (after which it eventually dries out). In some varieties, the new "pups" continue to grow together as "tufts" but can always be separated individually.

They originate from South and Central America, inhabiting deserts, forests, and mountains, mostly living in the tree canopies but can also be found on rocks or on the ground.

They should be placed indoors, well exposed to light with some sun, but protected from strong sunlight. During the warm months, they can be kept outdoors, shielded from intense sun.

They are extremely resilient plants, widely used in decoration, either simply (just the plants) or mounted using glue, preferably neutral silicone adhesives specific for plants, or fixed with wires, cords, or simply fitting them onto all kinds of surfaces, except rusty iron.

For their maintenance, just mist them 1 to 2 times per week (more in Summer; if Winter is humid, do not mist until the plants need water) and fertilize biweekly with a balanced fertilizer (e.g., complete Bonsai fertilizer - Fertil-Bonsai) diluted to 25%, that is, 1/4 of the normal recommended dose for Bonsai.

During the warm months, whenever the plants allow it, they can be submerged once a week for a few minutes in water to fully hydrate. Except for mounted arrangements, as this can cause the wood, moss, etc., to rot.

Let your imagination run wild, the possibilities are endless!!!!!

SECRET OF DESERT

Luso-Bonsai has developed a decorative concept with Tillandsias, which they called "Secret of Desert".

We place Tillandsias on various types of materials such as trunks, roots, rocks, or inside elegant decorative glass containers, turning these wonderful plants into a living and unique decorative item.

For their maintenance, the care instructions mentioned above for "loose" plants should be followed, always paying attention to the nature of the support used to prolong its durability.
