The "Autumn Fertilization" is one of the most important phases in preparing a Bonsai for the following year, especially for outdoor plants.
After summer, there is an additional growth period (commonly known as the 2nd Spring), during which the trees prepare for winter, for the lignification of tissues, creating a new ring of sap vessels, which leads to the typical "thickening" of branches and "root hardening".
It is also at this time that nutrients accumulate for the "Spring start," especially for plants that begin the year flowering (Prunus, Apple trees among others), and when we give a final "boost" to "complete" the Autumn fruiting (Pomegranate trees / Apple trees / Persimmons / Citrus, etc...).
This is also the ideal time to stimulate soil life, with the inoculation of Mycorrhizae and Rhizospheric Microorganisms.
To ensure these goals, we should complement the "basic nutrition plan" which includes a complete fertilizer (Fertil Bonsai Humic, or Green & Gold Bonsai Organic or Biogold) and a biostimulant (Bio Bonsai Activ), with :
All Species - September/October
All species until November
P/K Bonsai Algae - Technical Sheet
Outdoor - September/October/November*
Indoor - October/November
Outdoor - September/October/November*
Autumn fertilization should always end with a slow-release organic fertilizer.
* the final application date outdoors depends on:
-the cultivation zone (colder zones stop earlier)
-the ambient temperatures of the year itself (in warmer years we apply later)
-The species involved (evergreen plants and conifers are fertilized later than deciduous ones).
-the vegetative state of the plant that year; if it shows vigorous autumn growth, we can fertilize later (this growth can be caused by late pruning/regrowth or fertilization plans for growth throughout the year).
