Figueira Bonsai of 29 years old
Native species of Southwest Asia and the Mediterranean, belonging to the Moraceae family.
Bonsai deciduous, with green leaves on top and grayish underneath, with 3 to 5 lobes.
Appreciated in Bonsai for its punctual fruiting and leaf shape, which when pruned at the first leaves can significantly reduce the size.
The Fig Bonsai is an outdoor plant.
Common Name: Fig tree
Scientific Name: Ficus carica
Characteristics: Native to Southwest Asia and the Mediterranean, it belongs to the Moraceae family.
Medium-sized deciduous tree, with green leaves on top and grayish underneath, with 3 to 5 lobes. Appreciated in Bonsai for its fruiting and leaf shape.
Location: Outdoors, where it receives 2 to 3 hours of direct sunlight per day (ideally in the morning or late afternoon), protected from strong winds and frost. It is very hardy, but it is common for the leaves to appear sunburned in mid-summer.
Watering: Water the soil abundantly until plenty of water drains out of the drainage holes, to moisten the soil evenly, always from above and never by immersion, using a watering can with fine holes.
Tips about watering, see the watering technical sheet watering.
Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between each watering (to check if the plant needs water, touch the soil with your fingers).
If you have a tray under the Bonsai, never leave any water in it (to prevent root rot).
There is no benefit in misting the leaves; only do so on days when fertilizing and if the fertilizer is for foliar application, but ensure the leaves dry by nightfall to avoid fungi.
Nutrition: From February to September/October, follow a base plan composed of a complete fertilizer (Fertil Bonsai Humic, or Green & Gold Bonsai Organic or Biogold), and a biostimulant (Bio Bonsai Activ), which can also be combined with other products from our range.
Detailed information on how to combine these products with others in our range, or for a more specific nutrition plan, see the complete nutrition plan technical sheet.
Pruning: Due to the large leaf size, great care must be taken not to let the branches elongate. Usually, after the first leaf, we perform "Metsumi".
Whenever the plant is healthy, it can be defoliated in the middle of summer.
Tips about pruning, see the pruning and defoliation technical sheet.
Transplanting: Using Bonsai Leafy Soil in February, before budding starts.
Details about transplanting, post-transplant care, and specific fortifiers you can use can be found in the transplanting technical sheet.
Wiring: Preferably at the end of winter or during defoliation in summer, but wiring can be done practically all year round.
Instructions on wiring, see the wiring technical sheet.
