Common Name: Mulberry

Scientific Name:  Morus sp.

Characteristics: Belongs to the Moraceae family and most species originate from Asia.

Medium to large sized deciduous tree with light green leaves, which can be rounded or lobed. Highly valued for its fruits and autumn coloration.

Location: Outdoors, where it receives 2 to 3 hours of direct sunlight per day (ideally in the morning or late afternoon), protected from strong winds and frost. It is very hardy, but it is common for the leaves to appear sunburned in mid-summer.

Watering: Water the soil abundantly until plenty of water comes out of the drainage holes, to evenly moisten the soil, always from above and never by immersion, using a watering can with fine holes.

For watering tips, see the watering technical sheet.

It has a high water consumption, and although resistant to sun, the leaves dehydrate easily.

Allow the surface layer of the soil to dry slightly between each watering (to check if the plant needs water, touch the soil with your fingers).

If you have a tray under the Bonsai, never leave any water in it (to avoid root rot).

There is no benefit in misting the leaves; only do this on days when you fertilize and if the fertilizer is for foliar application, but ensure the leaves dry by night to avoid fungi.

Nutrition: From February to September/October, follow a basic plan consisting of a complete fertilizer (Fertil Bonsai Humic, or Green & Gold Bonsai Organic or Biogold), and a biostimulant throughout the year (Bio Bonsai Activ), which can also be combined with other products from our range.

Detailed information on how to combine these products with others in our range, or for a more specific nutrition plan, see the complete nutrition plan technical sheet.

Pruning: Given the large leaf size, we must be very careful not to let them elongate. Usually after the first leaf, we perform "Metsumi" immediately.

Whenever the plant is healthy, it can be defoliated in mid-summer.

For pruning tips, see the pruning and defoliation technical sheet.

Transplanting: Using Bonsai Soil for Deciduous Trees in February, before bud break starts. Perform a formative pruning along with the transplant to balance the plant’s water needs.

For details about transplanting, post-transplant care, and specific fortifiers you can use, see the transplanting technical sheet.

Wiring: Preferably at the end of winter or during defoliation.

For wiring guidelines, see the wiring technical sheet.
