Common Name: Almond Tree

Scientific Name: Prunus Dulcis

Description: Originating from the Mediterranean regions of the Middle East (Turkey, Pakistan, and Syria), it belongs to the Rosaceae family.

In Portugal, it is widely cultivated for almond production in the Algarve, Douro, and Trás-os-Montes regions.

Deciduous bonsai, highly appreciated for its light pink flowering, which occasionally rewards us with fruit.

Location: Outdoors where it receives 3 to 4 hours of direct sunlight per day (ideally in the morning or late afternoon), protected from strong winds and frost, although it tolerates cold well.

Watering: Water the soil abundantly until a lot of water drains out from the drainage holes, to evenly moisten the soil, always from above, never by immersion, using a watering can with fine holes.

For watering tips, see the
watering technical sheet.

Allow the surface layer of the soil to dry slightly between each watering (to check if the plant needs water, touch the soil with your fingers).

If you have a saucer under the bonsai, never leave any water in it (to prevent root rot).

There is no benefit in misting the leaves; only do it on days when you fertilize and if the fertilizer is for foliar application, but ensure the leaves dry by night to avoid fungi.

Nutrition: From February to September/October, follow a basic plan consisting of a complete fertilizer (Fertil Bonsai Humic, or Green & Gold Bonsai Organic or Biogold), and a biostimulant throughout the year (Bio Bonsai Activ), which can also be combined with other products from our range.

Detailed information on how to combine these products with others from our range, or for a more specific nutrition plan, see the complete nutrition plan technical sheet.

Pruning: Allow 5 to 6 leaves to grow, then reduce back to the first leaves.

For pruning tips, see the pruning and defoliation technical sheet.

Repotting: With Foliar Bonsai Soil in January/February, before leaf bud break at the end or after flowering.

Details about repotting, post-repotting care, and specific fortifiers you can use can be found in the repotting technical sheet.

Wiring: Can be wired all year round. Usually, wiring is done at the end of winter before budding, or in summer along with formation pruning and total/partial defoliation.

Guidelines on wiring can be found in the wiring technical sheet.
