Common Name: Sageretia

Scientific Name: Sageretia theezans

Characteristics: Originating from Central and South Asia, it belongs to the Rhamnaceae family.

An evergreen leaf bonsai, bright green, highly appreciated for its spring budding which turns pink when well exposed to the sun.

Its bark continuously renews and peels off in layers, leaving the base of the trunk with different shades, giving it a special beauty.

Location: Indoors near a window (maximum distance 50 cm), without curtains or blinds, where it receives 2 to 3 hours of direct sunlight per day, rotated 180° weekly, away from heat sources or air conditioning. It can spend the hot months outdoors but does not tolerate temperatures below 12°C.

It can spend the hot months outside or even be cultivated outdoors as long as it is well protected from frost. If the weather is very cold, it may behave as deciduous.

Watering: Water the soil abundantly until a good amount of water exits through the drainage holes, to evenly moisten the soil, always from above, never by immersion, using a watering can with fine nozzles.

If you have a tray under the Bonsai, never leave any water in it (to prevent the roots from rotting).

There is no benefit in misting the leaves; only do so on days you fertilize and if the fertilizer is specific for foliar application, but ensure the leaves are dry by night to avoid fungi.

Nutrition: From February to November, using a basic plan composed of a complete fertilizer (Fertil Bonsai Humic, or Green & Gold Bonsai Organic or Biogold), and a biostimulant all year round (Bio Bonsai Activ), which can also be combined with other products from our range.

Pruning: Pruning is done by letting 6 to 8 leaves grow, then cutting back to the first leaves.

Repotting: With Bonsai Leaf Soil in April/May, with strong pruning and/or partial defoliation.

Wiring: Uncommon, can be done all year round, very brittle.
