Common Name: Cotoneaster
Scientific Name: Cotoneaster spp.
Description: Originating from temperate zones of Asia, Europe, and Africa, it belongs to the Rosaceae family.
A slow-growing shrub, semi-deciduous leaves, green and small (there are also "variegated" species where part of the leaf is white). Highly appreciated for its white or pink flowers and fruits that can range from red to yellow or even black.
Location: Outdoors, where it receives 2 to 3 hours of direct sunlight per day (ideally in the morning or late afternoon), protected from strong winds and frost.
Watering: Water the soil abundantly until a lot of water comes out of the drainage holes, to uniformly moisten the soil, always from above never by immersion, using a watering can with fine holes.
Tips about watering, see the technical sheet on watering.
Let the top layer of soil dry slightly between each watering (to confirm if the plant needs water, touch the soil with your fingers).
If you have a tray under the Bonsai, never leave any water in it (to prevent the roots from rotting).
There is no advantage in spraying the leaves; only do so on days when you fertilize and if the fertilizer is for foliar application, but ensure the leaves dry by night to avoid fungi.
Nutrition: From February to October/November, follow a basic plan composed of a complete fertilizer (Fertil Bonsai Humic, or Green & Gold Bonsai Organic or Biogold), and a biostimulant (Bio Bonsai Activ), which can also be combined with other products from our range.
Detailed information on how to combine these products with others from our range, or for a more specific nutrition plan, see the complete nutrition plan technical sheet.
Pruning: It has a very bushy growth with crossed branches. Maintenance pruning is done throughout the growth period. At the end of winter, before budding, a shaping and lowering pruning can be done to define its structure.
As soon as floral buds appear, prune carefully to avoid removing them.
Tips about pruning, see the pruning and defoliation technical sheet.
Repotting: Use Terra Bonsai Folhosas in February, before budding starts.
Details about repotting, post-repotting care, and specific fortifiers you can use are available in the repotting technical sheet.
Wiring: Can be done all year round.
Instructions on wiring can be found in the wiring technical sheet.
