Common Name: Cotoneaster
Scientific Name: Cotoneaster spp.
Description: Originating from the temperate zones of Asia, Europe, and Africa, it belongs to the Rosaceae family.
A slow-growing shrub, semi-deciduous leaves, green and small (there are also "variegated" species where part of the leaf is white). Highly appreciated for its white or pink flowers and fruits that can range from red to yellow or even black.
Location: Outdoors, where it receives 2 to 3 hours of direct sunlight per day (ideally in the morning or late afternoon), protected from strong winds and frost.
Watering: Water the soil abundantly until a lot of water comes out of the drainage holes, to evenly moisten the soil, always from above and never by immersion, using a watering can with fine holes.
Tips about watering, see the watering technical sheet watering.
Allow the top layer of the soil to dry slightly between each watering (to check if the plant needs water, touch the soil with your fingers).
If you have a tray under the Bonsai, never leave any water in it (to prevent the roots from rotting).
There is no benefit to spraying the leaves; only do so on days when you fertilize and if the fertilizer is for foliar application, but ensure the leaves dry by night to avoid fungi.
Nutrition: From February to October/November, with a basic plan consisting of a complete fertilizer (Fertil Bonsai Humic, or Green & Gold Bonsai Organic or Biogold), and a biostimulant (Bio Bonsai Activ), which can also be combined with other products from our range.
Detailed information on how to combine these products with the rest of our range, or for a more specific nutrition plan, see the complete nutrition plan technical sheet.
Pruning: It has a very bushy growth with crossed branches. Maintenance pruning is done throughout the whole growing period. At the end of winter before budding, a formative and reduction pruning can be done to define its structure.
As soon as floral buds appear, pruning should be done carefully to avoid removing them.
Tips about pruning, see the pruning and defoliation technical sheet.
Transplanting: Using Foliar Bonsai Soil in February, before budding starts.
Details about transplanting, post-transplant care, and specific fortifiers you can use can be found in the transplanting technical sheet.
Wiring: Can be done all year round.
Instructions on wiring, see the wiring technical sheet.

Luso Bonsai
