Citrus Myrtifolia Bonsai of 12 years
The Bonsai Citrus Myrtifolia is an evergreen tree with oval leaves about 3 cm long, in a bright green shade.
It is highly appreciated for its very fragrant flowering, followed by fruits about 2 to 2 cm in diameter, which remain on the plant for a long period, giving it a very attractive appearance.
It likes sun and good exposure, and should live outdoors year-round; it can live indoors as long as there is no air conditioning and plenty of sun (e.g., balconies).
The Bonsai Citrus Myrtifolia is an outdoor plant.
Common Name: Citrus Myrtifolia
Scientific Name: Citrus Myrtifolia
Description: It belongs to the Rutaceae family and can be found throughout the Mediterranean Coast, with significant presence in Italy, where it is known as "Chinotto" and gives rise to a beverage of the same name. It is also widely used to flavor alcoholic drinks and provides the traditional taste of the aperitif Campari.
The name Myrtifolia refers to the fact that its evergreen leaf resembles the shape of Myrtle leaves; its abundant and highly fragrant flowers in Spring produce a small orange (2 to 3 cm) that is green in Summer and bright orange in Autumn/Winter.
Location: In mild Mediterranean climates, it should live outdoors year-round as long as it is protected from strong winds and frost. It requires at least 2 to 3 hours of direct sunlight and should be rotated 180° weekly.
In areas with harsher winters, it is advisable to protect it during the coldest months in an indoor area without any heating (e.g., a sunroom), near a window well exposed to the sun with a minimum of 2 to 3 hours of sunlight, and it should be rotated 180° weekly.
Watering: Water the soil abundantly until a lot of water drains out of the drainage holes, to evenly moisten the soil, always from above and never by immersion, using a watering can with fine holes.
For tips about watering, consult the watering technical sheet.
Allow the surface layer of the soil to dry slightly between each watering (to check if the plant already needs water, touch the soil with your fingers).
If you have a tray under the Bonsai, never leave any water in it (to prevent root rot).
There is no advantage in spraying the leaves; only do so on the days you fertilize and if the fertilizer is for foliar application, but make sure the leaves dry by night to avoid fungi.
Nutrition: From February to October/November, follow a base plan composed of a complete fertilizer (Fertil Bonsai Humic, or Green & Gold Bonsai Organic or Biogold), and a biostimulant (Bio Bonsai Activ), which can also be combined with other products from our range.
Detailed information on how to combine these products with others in our range, or for a more specific nutrition plan, consult the complete nutrition plan technical sheet.
Pruning: Let it grow 6 to 8 leaves, then cut back to the first leaves.
Pruning tips can be found in the pruning and defoliation technical sheet.
Repotting: Use Terra Bonsai Folhosas in February/March, with strong partial defoliation.
Details about repotting, post-repotting care, and specific fortifiers you can use are available in the repotting technical sheet.
Wiring: Wiring can be done all year round.
Guidelines for wiring are available in the wiring technical sheet.
