Common Name: Cork Oak

Scientific Name: Quercus Suber

Characterization: Species originating from the Mediterranean area (Greece/Portugal/Spain/Italy), belonging to the Fagaceae family.

Given the hardiness and tradition of the species in Portugal, Bonsai Cork Oaks are highly appreciated and are indispensable in any National collection.

Location: Very resistant, they like abundant sun, living outdoors all year round, where they get 2 to 3 hours of direct sun per day (ideally in the morning or late afternoon), protected from strong winds and frost.

Watering: Water the soil abundantly until plenty of water comes out of the drainage holes, in order to moisten the soil evenly, always from above never by immersion, using a watering can with fine nozzles.

Tips about watering, consult the watering technical sheet watering.

Pay attention to the spring budding phase when there are many tender leaves and water consumption is higher.

If you have a dish under the Bonsai, never leave any water in it (to prevent the roots from rotting).

There is no benefit in misting the leaves; only do so on days when you fertilize and if the fertilizer is specific for foliar application, but make sure the leaves dry by night to avoid fungi.

Nutrition: From February to October/November, with a basic plan composed of a complete fertilizer (Fertil Bonsai Humic, or Green & Gold Bonsai Organic or Biogold), and a biostimulant (Bio Bonsai Activ), which can also be combined with other products from our range.

Detailed information on how to combine these products with others in our range, or for a more specific nutrition plan, consult the complete nutrition plan technical sheet.

Pruning: Maintenance from spring to autumn; formative pruning can be done in winter or after partial defoliation in summer.

Tips on pruning, consult the pruning and defoliation technical sheet.

Transplanting: Using Bonsai Leafy Soil in February/March before budding begins. Always perform a partial defoliation and formative pruning before transplanting.

Details about transplanting, post-transplant care, and specific fortifiers you can use, consult the transplanting technical sheet.

Wiring: Preferably at the end of winter or in summer but with partial defoliation.

Instructions on wiring, consult the wiring technical sheet.
