Common Name: Almond

Scientific Name: Prunus Dulcis

Characterization: Originating from the Mediterranean areas of the Middle East (Turkey, Pakistan, and Syria), it belongs to the Rosaceae family.

In Portugal, it is widely grown for almond production in the Algarve, Douro, and Trás os Montes.

Bonsai with deciduous leaves, highly appreciated for its light pink flowering, which occasionally rewards us with fruit.

Location: Outdoors where it receives 3 to 4 hours of direct sunlight per day (ideally in the morning or late afternoon), protected from strong winds and frost, although it tolerates cold well.

Watering: Water the soil abundantly until plenty of water runs out of the drainage holes, in order to moisten the soil evenly, always from above, never by immersion, using a watering can with fine holes.

Tips about watering, please see the watering technical sheet watering.

Allow the surface layer of the soil to dry slightly between each watering (to check if the plant needs water, touch the soil with your fingers).

If you have a tray under the Bonsai, never leave any water in it (to prevent the roots from rotting).

There is no benefit in misting the leaves; only do so on days when you fertilize and if the fertilizer is for foliar application, but make sure the leaves dry by night to avoid fungi.

Nutrition: From February to September/October, follow a basic plan composed of a complete fertilizer (Fertil Bonsai Humic, or Green & Gold Bonsai Organic or Biogold), and a biostimulant (Bio Bonsai Activ), which can also be combined with other products from our range.

Detailed information on how to combine these products with others from our range, or for a more specific nutrition plan, please consult the complete nutrition plan technical sheet.

Pruning: Allow 5 to 6 leaves to grow, then cut back to the first leaves.

Tips on pruning, please see the pruning and defoliation technical sheet.

Transplanting: Using Terra Bonsai Folhosas in January/February, before leaf bud break at the end or after flowering.

Details about transplanting, post-transplant care, and specific fortifiers you can use are available in the transplant technical sheet.

Wiring: Wiring can be done all year round. It is usually done at the end of winter before budding, or in summer along with formation pruning and total/partial defoliation.

Instructions on wiring can be found in the wiring technical sheet.
