Common Name: Pseudolarix

Scientific Name: Pseudolarix Amabilis

Characteristics: Member of the Pinaceae family, originating from China.

A small-sized tree, with the special characteristic of being a deciduous conifer; the needles turn yellow in winter and fall completely.

Its bark also has a special beauty, being gray in tone and developing cracks over the years.

Location: Outdoors, well exposed to the sun where it receives 2 to 3 hours of direct sunlight per day (ideally in the morning or late afternoon), protected from strong winds and frost.

In the peak of summer, it should be protected from the strongest sun hours (a shade cloth is usually sufficient) to prevent the new needles from burning.

Watering: Water the soil abundantly until plenty of water drains out of the drainage holes, to evenly moisten the soil, always from above and never by immersion, using a watering can with fine holes.

Tips on watering can be found in the watering technical sheet.

Let the surface layer of the soil dry between each watering (to check if the plant needs water, touch the soil with your fingers). It consumes water moderately, although special attention is needed in summer, as the new needles dry quickly when thirsty.

If you have a tray under the Bonsai, never leave any water in it (to prevent the roots from rotting).

There is no advantage in misting the leaves; only do so on days you fertilize and if the fertilizer is specific for foliar application, but ensure the leaves dry by night to avoid fungi.

Nutrition: From February to September, use a basic plan composed of a complete fertilizer (Fertil Bonsai Humic, or Green & Gold Bonsai Organic or Biogold), and a biostimulant (Bio Bonsai Activ), which can also be combined with other products from our range.

Detailed information on how to combine these with other products from our range, or for a more specific nutrition plan, can be found in the complete nutrition plan technical sheet.

Pruning: Formation pruning can be done at the end of winter when the tree is leafless. Maintenance pruning is done by cutting above a new bud, which can be easily identified next to the new needles.

Tips on pruning are available in the pruning and defoliation technical sheet.

Repotting: Using Conifer Bonsai Soil in February/March, when the buds start to "move".

Details about repotting, post-repotting care, and specific fortifiers you can use are available in the repotting technical sheet.

Wiring: At the end of winter before bud break.

Information about wiring can be found in the wiring technical sheet.
