12 Year Old Bonsai Mulberry Tree
It belongs to the Moraceae family, and most species come from Asia.
It is a medium/large-sized deciduous tree with light green leaves, which can be rounded or lobed. Highly appreciated for its fruits and autumn coloration.
The Mulberry Bonsai is an outdoor plant.
Common Name: Mulberry
Scientific Name: Morus sp.
Characteristics: Belongs to the Moraceae family and most species originate from Asia.
Medium/large sized tree, deciduous with light green leaves that can be rounded or lobed. Highly valued for its fruits and autumn coloration.
Location: Outdoors, where it receives 2 to 3 hours of direct sunlight per day (ideally in the morning or late afternoon), protected from strong winds and frost. It is very hardy, but it is common for the leaves to appear sunburned in mid-summer.
Watering: Has a high water consumption, and although resistant to sun, the leaves dehydrate easily.
Water the soil abundantly until plenty of water flows out of the drainage holes, in order to evenly moisten the soil, always from above never by immersion, using a fine-rosette watering can.
Tips about watering, see the watering technical sheet watering.
Allow the surface layer of the soil to dry slightly between each watering (to confirm if the plant needs water, touch the soil with your fingers).
If you have a tray under the Bonsai, never leave any water in it (to prevent the roots from rotting).
There is no benefit in misting the leaves; only do so on days when you fertilize and if the fertilizer is for foliar application, but ensure the leaves dry by nightfall to avoid fungi.
Nutrition: From February to September/October, follow a basic plan consisting of a complete fertilizer (Fertil Bonsai Humic, or Green & Gold Bonsai Organic or Biogold), and a biostimulant (Bio Bonsai Activ), which can also be combined with other products from our range.
Detailed information on how to combine these products with the rest of our range, or for a more specific nutrition plan, see the complete nutrition plan technical sheet.
Pruning: Due to the large size of the leaves, we must be very careful not to let them elongate. Usually, after the first leaf, we immediately perform "Metsumi".
Whenever the plant is healthy, it can be defoliated in mid-summer.
Tips on pruning, see the pruning and defoliation technical sheet.
Repotting: Using Terra Bonsai Folhosas in February, before budding starts. Perform formative pruning along with repotting to balance the plant’s water status.
Details about repotting, post-repotting care, and specific fortifiers you can use, see the repotting technical sheet.
Wiring: Preferably at the end of winter or during defoliation.
Instructions on wiring, see the wiring technical sheet.
