Common Name: Citrus Myrtifolia
Scientific Name: Citrus Myrtifolia
Description: Belongs to the Rutaceae family, and can be found all along the Mediterranean Coast with significant presence in Italy, where it is known as "Chinotto" and gives its name to a beverage. It is also widely used to flavor alcoholic drinks and provides the traditional taste of the Campari aperitif.
The name Myrtifolia refers to the fact that its evergreen leaf resembles the shape of myrtle leaves; its abundant and very fragrant flowers in spring produce a small orange fruit (2 to 3 cm in size), green in summer and intense orange in autumn/winter.
Location: In Mediterranean and mild climates, it should live outdoors year-round provided it is protected from strong winds and frost, requires at least 2 to 3 hours of direct sunlight, and should be rotated 180° weekly.
In areas with harsher winters, it is advisable to protect it during the colder months indoors but without any heating (e.g., a sunroom), near a well-exposed window with a minimum of 2 to 3 hours of sunlight, and rotate 180° weekly.
Watering: Water the soil abundantly until a good amount of water flows out of the drainage holes, to uniformly moisten the soil, always watering from above never by immersion, using a watering can with fine holes.
For watering tips, please consult the watering technical sheet.
Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between each watering (to check if the plant needs water, touch the soil with your fingers).
If you have a tray under the Bonsai, never leave any water in it (to prevent root rot).
There is no benefit to misting the leaves; only do this on days you fertilize and if the fertilizer is for foliar application, but ensure the leaves dry by night to avoid fungi.
Nutrition: From February to October/November, follow a basic plan consisting of a complete fertilizer (Fertil Bonsai Humic, or Green & Gold Bonsai Organic or Biogold), and a biostimulant (Bio Bonsai Activ), which can also be combined with other products from our range.
For detailed information on how to combine these products with the rest of our range, or for a more specific nutrition plan, please consult the complete nutrition plan technical sheet.
Pruning: Let 6 to 8 leaves grow, then reduce to the first leaves.
For pruning tips, please consult the pruning and defoliation technical sheet.
Repotting: Using Bonsai Soil for Broadleaf in February/March, with strong partial defoliation.
For details on repotting, post-repotting care, and specific fortifiers you can use, please consult the repotting technical sheet.
Wiring: Can be wired all year round.
For wiring guidelines, please consult the wiring technical sheet.
